January 2023 saw the publication of The Snowdrop Tree following a conversation Denise Ross, Slide Away's founder, had with Ema Rowe just over 12 months earlier. Ema is a Forest School Leader and author and says of The Snowdrop Tree that ‘It is a book that was always meant to be.’
The story of the Snowdrop Tree begins with the Snowy Bear family discovering that their favourite tree has died. The little Snowy Bears are sad, confused and angry, but one by one their woodland friends appear to help them. It is a lovely story with beautiful illustrations that can be used to open up conversations about death and dying or support children following the death of a pet, family member or friend. The pages between the covers of The Snowdrop Tree offer so much more than a story. The book provides useful information to support grown-ups understand and support the needs of a bereaved child and offers suggestions for outdoor activities to help children manage their feelings. Everyone who reads the book will have their favourite woodland creature and activity. Denise's favourite is Owl’s phenology wheel linking memories to physical changes in nature, but the words of Mouse stay with her ‘We may be small, but we have something to say,’ reminding grownups that children are never too young to grieve.
