Our partnership with schools

In 2004, our founder, Denise Ross, together with her colleague Dr Ben Hayes, co-published an article in the Journal of Education and Child Psychology describing the techniques and outcomes of her work with groups of bereaved pupils in schools. This research evidences the value of our decision to work in partnership with schools when supporting bereaved children and young people.

Conclusions drawn from the research included:

In 2024, in an article by Zofia Niemtus in Tes Magazine entitled ‘What is trauma and what role should schools play in support?’ Dr David Trickey, co-director of the UK Trauma Council and a consultant clinical psychologist specialising in work with traumatised young people and their families, concurred, saying:

Slide Away has always worked in partnership with schools, taking referrals only from nominated and inducted ‘School Bereavement Contacts’ in schools committing to the partnership with a nominal annual subscription.

School Bereavement Contacts are offered free support, advice and guidance, as well as the chance to acquire skills and knowledge through Slide Away’s ‘Children’s Grief’ training modules, which are approved under the British Psychological Society Quality Mark Scheme for the purposes of Continued Professional Development.

In this way, alongside the therapeutic support Slide Away offers to the bereaved children and young people, schools gain the skills and confidence to support their bereaved pupils from within the school community.

Because we work with schools, we are able to access local communities across Kent to offer our service as widely and deeply into the region as we can.

We also offer ‘Project Eileen’ free resources to any UK secondary school wanting help to deliver the bereavement grief and loss elements of the PSHE curriculum.
