What we do

Since 2004, Slide Away has provided bereavement support to children and young people under the age of 18 who live or attend school in Kent. We also support their families and those who care for them.

We take our referrals from subscribed schools and alternative providers of education in Kent.

We call our representative in each of our subscribed schools our ‘School Bereavement Contact’.

What we offer children and families

We offer group sessions to children and young people who have been bereaved of a family member or friend; parents and carers are supported in group sessions too.

Through consultation, we provide advice and guidance to our School Bereavement Contacts to help them support pupils who have a parent or sibling with a life-limiting illness.

Referred children are also able to access discounted one-to-one bereavement counselling with a partner organisation.

Our group sessions

Every child or young person referred to Slide Away is assessed and offered the opportunity to attend the face to face group session (or sessions) that we feel best meet their needs.

Children bereaved of a parent will also be invited to attend a Mother’s or Father’s Day session to help them manage these difficult times of the year.

All our families are welcome to attend our Advent session just before Christmas.

We also work with parents and carers in our sessions. If the child is young or has complex SEND, they attend with their child. Parents and carers of older children attend their own session.

What we offer schools

We offer an induction, called our ‘Tool Kit Training’, to every School Bereavement Contact to explain the roles and responsibilities of the partnership. We outline the support that we can offer their pupils and their families and we detail the advice, guidance and training they can access from our clinical team. Our referral route is explained on induction.

All our training, including our ‘Children’s Grief’ training modules (approved by the British Psychological Society Quality Mark Scheme for the purposes of Continuous Professional Development) are FREE for our School Bereavement Contacts. Other professionals working with bereaved children and young people are welcome to train with us too.

Through the brand, Project Eileen, we make interactive, multi-media teaching resources available FREE to any UK secondary schools that wants help to deliver grief and bereavement content as part of the PSHE curriculum.

“I want to say a huge thank you for sending The Most Colourful Creature in the Jungle book to school. I shared the book with the Year 2 child today. I can honestly say that I have never experienced such an emotional moment. This really has helped him with closure of the death. He compared the chameleon/other animals in the book to his dog and his family and their feelings as we read through. I feel honoured to have witnessed the moment. The Slide Away team is incredible!”

"Thank you so much for attending our staff meeting and speaking to the team about the fantastic work that Slide Away does in supporting bereaved children and their families. Thank you for answering everyone’s questions so thoughtfully and for ensuring that staff felt comfortable and supported while discussing such sensitive subjects. We really appreciated your time, openness, and the valuable insight you shared with us."
